Yeak Laom Lake is located 3-4 km east of Ban Lung the Capital City of Ratanakiri Province. At the centre of the area is Yeak Laom Lake-a vicanoc creater lake believed to be about 700,000 years old. The Present day lake is about 800 meteres and more than 50 meters deep. it suround by forest.
History:
The indigenous inhabitants of the region, The Khmer Ler have long recognized the lake as the secrete place, home the spirit of land, water and forest. Yeak Laom lake carries a rich the mythology, evoking its genesis and history and describe the fabulous aquatic being that lives there. It is said that no permanent building can be established on the bank and the surrounding forest can not be cut because it is home to spirit. Yeak Laom Lake is part of the heritage of Tumpun people and is a symbol of Ratanakiri Province of Khmer people.
In the 1960s, during the Sangkum Reastr Niyum Period of King Sihanouk, the recreational potential of Yeak Laom Lake was frist realised. King Sihanouk built a chalet by the lake and as well as the road and some other houses. However bombing in 1970 during the war Khmer rouge and Lon Nol forces destroyed the chalet and initial infrastructure.
After the Khmer Rouge Regime, people began setting again slowly until their present position. In that time, there was a large amount of forest clearance for agriculture, and soldiers were responsible for some logging. To this day, there are still remains of more solid's trenches and guns around the lake.
Now Yeak Laom Lake is very popuar for many visitors both in Khmer and foreigners for visiting and bathing in the lake and the water is cold and very comfortable for making people feel fresh and happy especially, there is a great view of forest around the lake.
